AB  - This paper deals with the analysis of modalities in contemporary university discourse on the basis of a thorough examination of presidents' welcome messages. Taking into account Gosselin's categorization of modalities, the aim of this article is to show how higher education institutions and their students are depicted through the use of various modalities. As this study reveals, universities are often portrayed in terms of the obligations and responsibilities (deontic modality) to be assumed, whereas students are presented with the possibilities (epistemic modality) they can benefit from
