RT Journal Article SR Electronic A1 Zavaglini, Claudia T1 Cesare Pavese and the forms of dialogue JF Romanica Olomucensia YR 2018 VO 30 IS 1 SP 153 OP 162 DO 10.5507/ro.2018.010 UL https://romanica.upol.cz/artkey/rom-201801-0010.php AB This paper aims at further expanding the already existing scholarship on the relationship between Pavese and dialogue, meant not only as a mere tendency underlying his writing style, but also as a specific and "irresistible" literary form that materializes in different ways: in the famous short texts entitled Dialoghi con Leucò and in the ideologically oriented dialogues called Dialoghi col compagno. The first part of the article focuses on Il mestiere di vivere: an in-depth analysis allows the main dialogical elements emerging from the author's diary and also his theoretical considerations on the "new form" to be highlighted. The second and third parts of the paper analyse the two different types of Pavese's dialogues. The work Dialoghi con Leucò interacts symbolically with reality and is always faithful to the founding dimensions which are already evident in the title: myth and dialogue, both unusual. On the contrary, what inspires the Dialoghi col compagno, published in the newspaper L'Unità, is a hic-et-nunc urgency, specifically the necessity to provide a direct answer to the exigencies of history. In conclusion, through its various declensions, dialogue expresses the complexity of the author's relationship with the world: despite appearances, even in their (often misunderstood) mythological version, Pavese's dialogues should be considered as an authentic and engaged response to reality, rather than a means of escape or an expression of surrender.
