AB Duelo en El Paraiso, by Juan Goytisolo, a Spanish writer of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, is a romantic drama starring a band of orphaned children in the final months of the Spanish Civil War. Having gradually assimilated the violence around them, these orphaned children gathered in a Catalan school engage in dangerous and deadly games. Because they borrow the material, psychological, and ideological instruments of their desocialization in the context of war, the picaresque is militarized in Duelo en El Paraiso. ER
