AB In recent years, there has been a notable and growing interest in cognitive analysis and its relationship with linguistics. This study proposes a cognitive perspective to examine and categorise the titles of theatrical works written between the 15th and 18th centuries and gathered in the research study "Indice de las obras clasicas de la literatura espanola, en cuyos titulos figuran refranes frases hechas (Siglos XV-XVIII)" by Jose de Jaime Gomez and Jose Maria de Jaime Loren. The methodology employed involves the classification of these paremiological elements in the light of the book Metaphors We Live By, developed by Lakoff and Johnson, with the purpose of addressing the underlying meaning in paremias. The research categorises the paremias into orientational, ontological, and mixed metaphors. Additionally, it highlights the importance of the construction of linguistic and cultural meanings. Consequently, the primary objective is, first, to identify, record, and categorise these paremias and, second, to demonstrate the relevance of paremias as linguistic tools capable of revealing a meaning that is metaphorically reflected. In conclusion, it highlights the effectiveness of the cognitive approach in the taxonomy of paremias to understand their meanings and their impact on communication. Furthermore, the metaphorical flexibility of paremias is recognised.
