Quo vaditis litterae postmodernae ? Le postmodernisme est-il la finde la littérature ?

Cette étude se penche sur une question cardinale voire incontournable dans les débats récents : celle de savoir si le postmodernisme peut être appréhendé en tant que fin de la littérature ou, au contraire, comme une nouvelle époque de libération, de déhiérarchisation, l'époque qui célèbre le potentiel émancipateur du jeu postmoderne avec la langue, avec l'intertextualité. Pour pouvoir en illustrer les deux pôles opposés, nous avons centré nos recherches sur les philosophes et critiques littéraires qui semblent pouvoir apporter une certaine clarté dans la discussion qui constitue le noyau de cette étude. Parmi les critiques qui adoptent une attitude méfiante à l'égard du postmodernisme figurent d'un côté Michel Maffesoli, Anna Hogenová ou Rosalind Krauss. De l'autre côté, il y a Linda Hutcheon, Julia Kristeva ou Umberto Eco. Après avoir fait l'analyse des deux positions opposées, nous avons recherché les manifestations concrètes de cette dualité. Les sceptiques comprennent le postmodernisme en tant qu'une forme du déclin qui est associée à la prédominance des critères de marché et de performance dans la production et la réception des œuvres littéraires. Les partisans du postmodernisme caractérisent celui-ci comme représentant l'ère de la subjectivité, de l'expérimentation ce qui favoriserait la liberté artistique au détriment des règles, des concepts voire des systèmes de valeurs acceptés jusqu'alors. Bien que la réponse à la question posée au début ne semble pas être définitive, cette étude propose une distinction claire entre deux conceptions du postmodernisme et tente de présenter une approche aux débats contemporains sur la littérature postmoderne.

Quo vaditis litterae postmodernae? Is postmodernism the end of literature?

This study examines a cardinal question in recent debates: whether postmodernism can be understood as the end of literature or, on the other hand, as a new era of liberation, the era that celebrates the emancipatory potential of postmodern play with language and intertextuality. In order to illustrate two opposing poles, this research is based on philosophers and literary critics who seem to be able to bring some clarity to the discussion that forms the core of this study. Among the critics who adopt a suspicious attitude towards postmodernism are Michel Maffesoli, Anna Hogenová, and Rosalind Krauss. On the other side of the barricade are Linda Hutcheon, Julia Kristeva, and Umberto Eco. After the two opposing positions are analysed, the concrete manifestations of this duality are identified. Sceptics understand postmodernism as a form of decline associated with the predominance of market and performance criteria in the production and reception of literary works. Proponents of postmodernism characterise it as the era of subjectivity, of experimentation favouring artistic freedom at the expense of previously accepted rules, concepts, and even value systems. Although the answer to the question posed at the beginning does not seem to have a definitive solution, this study proposes a clear distinction between two conceptions of postmodernism and attempts to present a certain panorama of contemporary debates on postmodern literature.
