A proposal for structuring verbal idioms by semantic fields as a reference tool in teaching Spanish as a foreign language

Tatiana Denisenko

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):1-20 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.001

This paper aims to analyse, on the one hand, how the theory of semantic fields can be applied to the teaching of idioms in the Spanish as a Foreign Language classroom (TSFL). On the other hand, an approach towards the organisation of Spanish idioms by semantic fields is suggested in order to create a consultation tool for both teachers and learners. Through the systematic tracking and extraction of idioms that express tastes, desires, and feelings, 27 semantic fields were identified for this purpose. Likewise, each semantic field was subdivided according to the syntagmatic combinatorics of the idioms. As a result, the compilation of each semantic field...

Proverbs with God in Don Quixote de la Mancha: a study compared with contemporary religious texts

Patricia Fernández Martín

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):21-39 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.002

The aim of this paper is to make a comparison between the use of the proverbs with the term God in Don Quixote de la Mancha and a set of religious texts also belonging to the Spanish Golden Age. The Coserian concept of a "universe of discourse" is taken as a basis in order to distinguish between the world of reference of literature, on the one hand, from that of faith, on the other. To achieve this, the proverbs in the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha that contain the term God are taken as a reference and, as a consequence, searched for in CORDE texts published between 1500 and 1699 with religious themes (biblical texts and...

Literal, metaphorical, and fictive motion in Italian proverbs: the influence of Path and Manner semantic components

Nicola Florio

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):41-59 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.003

The purpose of this paper is to present a corpus-based study carried out to analyse the expression of motion in the Italian language through the compilation of Italian proverbs gathered by Lapucci in his Dizionario dei proverbi italiani, aiming to examine the influence of Path and Manner semantic components conflated in the verbs for the description of literal, metaphorical, and fictive motion. Based on a Corpus Linguistics approach, for this study more than 25,000 Italian proverbs were analysed, and only those containing motion verbs were selected. More than 2,000 Italian proverbs were identified and classified according to their main motion...

Contrastive analysis of Chinese-Spanish proverbs related to gold: a linguistic cultural perspective

Chunyi Lei

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):61-77 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.004

Gold is a cultureme in both Chinese and Spanish, which is evidenced by their proverbs. Through a contrastive linguo-cultural analysis, this paper aims to study proverbs related to gold in these two languages. To carry out this study, first, proverbs referring to gold were collected in both languages. On the basis of this data, a corpus was created for each language. Then the target domain of each proverb was identified and they were grouped according to their respective themes. Subsequently, the similarities and differences between them were analysed, providing illustrative examples as linguistic evidence. Proverbs alluding to gold are utilised in...

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):79-93 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.005

The aim of this paper is to study χρύσεα χαλκείων 'gold for bronze', a Greek paroimia found in Homer's Iliad. The mechanisms by which this Homeric verse became a proverb will be analysed, such as its use in numerous passages by classical Greek and Latin authors, as well as intellectuals of the European Renaissance, particularly in their correspondence. With regard to the methodology, the methods pertaining to the field of Classical Philology have been employed. An exhaustive study of the texts from both a synchronic and a diachronic point of view was conducted, taking...

Ferran Robles Sabater

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):95-131 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.006

This paper examines the translation of the paremias of the Catalan chivalric novel Tirant lo Blanc (1490) in four of its modern versions in German, French, English, and Italian. The research has a double purpose: on the one hand, it aims to determine what general strategy was followed in each version and how this is reflected in the choice of certain translation techniques; on the other hand, it intends to show the differences between the four texts. In order to achieve these goals, the 126 paremiological units contained in Books I and II of the novel were examined. Once each of the paragraphs containing the paremias had been transcribed and...

The representation of the absurd in the light of Albert Camus's essay Le mythe de Sisyphe

Youssef Belmihi

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):133-159 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.007

This paper attempts to identify the seeds of the notion of the 'absurd' in the thought of Albert Camus in the light of his essay Le Mythe de Sisyphe ('The Myth of Sisyphus'). In order to analyse the terms of representation of this notion, it is necessary to carry out a notional screening in two complementary stages. The first traces the process from conception to meaning of the absurd, demonstrating the relationship between feelings and reason in the formation of this notion in Camus's mind. A priori resistant to definition, the notion of the absurd eventually took shape in Camus's mind as the expression of incompatibility...

La sequenza narrativa come unità narratologica minima e i descrittorinarratologici del fantastico

The narrative sequence as a minimal narratological unit and the narratological descriptors of the fantastic

Paolo Remorini

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):161-176 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.008

This paper is a contribution to the debate concerning the narrative sequence, defined here as the minimal narratological unit that covers both the narrative discourse (the sjuzhet), through the distinct narratological categories, and the narrated story (the fabula), through the narrative moments and functions, thus reflecting its essential attributes (linearity, unidirectionality, intersequentiality). To that end, the short stories Un volto umano by Tommaso Landolfi (1971) and Lontano lontano lontano (una storia vera) by Michele Mari (2012) were analysed, reporting for each sequence the corresponding descriptors of the narratological...

Quo vaditis litterae postmodernae ? Le postmodernisme est-il la finde la littérature ?

Quo vaditis litterae postmodernae? Is postmodernism the end of literature?

Jan Soukup

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):177-188 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.009

This study examines a cardinal question in recent debates: whether postmodernism can be understood as the end of literature or, on the other hand, as a new era of liberation, the era that celebrates the emancipatory potential of postmodern play with language and intertextuality. In order to illustrate two opposing poles, this research is based on philosophers and literary critics who seem to be able to bring some clarity to the discussion that forms the core of this study. Among the critics who adopt a suspicious attitude towards postmodernism are Michel Maffesoli, Anna Hogenová, and Rosalind Krauss. On the other side of the barricade are Linda Hutcheon,...

The specific role of the diary in the formation of identity through the example of Michel Tournier's novels

Darina Veverková

Romanica Olomucensia 2025, 37(1):189-199 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2025.010

The paper is focused on the process of the formation of the identity of people living in solitude, on the basis of the theories of Gilles Deleuze and Paul Ricoeur, according to which the presence of others is indispensable in this process. Other people affect our view of the world and also of ourselves considerably. If the formation of human identity is affected substantially by the presence of other people, the question that arises is "How is the human identity formed in solitude?" The remarkable role of the diary in this process is approached here, because it is the diary that replaces the important presence of another person - the listener. The...
