The acquisition of paremiological competence (PC) in a foreign language (FL) is always challenging because of the multitude of factors that affect its learning, mainly structural, cultural, and terminological factors. This is an issue that has received little attention in the specialised literature and therefore requires the establishment of adequate theoretical and methodological foundations through rigorous studies that define the lines of action necessary to address the treatment of these units in the FL class. This study sets out the state of the art of this phenomenon, carrying out a geographical contrastive analysis based on the creation of a...

The Lorenzo Diaries: phraseological and paremiological characterisation of the protagonist

M.ª Teresa Barbadillo de la Fuente

Romanica Olomucensia 2024, 36(2):207-224 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2024.018

Three novels published by Miguel Delibes over a period of forty years - between 1955 and 1995 - have as their protagonist Lorenzo, a hunter, emigrant, and pensioner, respectively, who through the procedure of an assumed speaker reflects his experiences, thoughts, and reactions in diaries of varying length and location. Lorenzo is a less sombre character than others in the narrative gallery of the writer from Valladolid, who showed particular sympathy for him, mainly because of the hunting hobby they shared, even though he was aware that in the course of those years the character changed, in spite of his own creator. The aim of this paper was to study...

Paremias in modern Spanish music: analysis of "LOS40" number 1 in 2023

Elke Cases Berbel

Romanica Olomucensia 2024, 36(2):225-238 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2024.019

Music plays an important role in the development of human beings and, similarly to paremias, it is nourished by cultural heritage and serves to express emotions, criticisms, or value judgements. As current songs make use of modern language, studying the presence of paremias will indicate if the members of the younger Spanish population use this type of phraseological unit (PU) in their daily lives. To carry out this study, all the Spanish songs that reached the top of the list of "LOS40", the leading music radio station in Spain, were selected as a corpus. Once all the paremias had been extracted, they were divided into unaltered paremias, anti-proverbs,...

A contrastive translatological and didactic approach in the teaching-learning of paremias in three Romance languages

Silvia-Maria Chireac, Paula Andreea Stîngã

Romanica Olomucensia 2024, 36(2):239-257 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2024.020

The aim of this study is to analyse from a contrastive point of view the use of paremias in three Romance languages: Spanish, Valencian, and Romanian, on the basis of a corpus of 36 paremias proposed by a total of 115 students from Spain and Romania. In order to check the translatability of the paremias from a translation and linguistic-cognitive perspective, the paremia chosen by each subject is analysed together with its translation in the other two Romance languages. In addition, the reason for choosing the paremias in the students' writings is explained. The results indicate that Spanish students prefer paremias related to their personal interests...

A imagem do gato nos provérbios portugueses e romenos

The image of the cat in Portuguese and Romanian proverbs

Adriana Ciama

Romanica Olomucensia 2024, 36(2):259-273 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2024.021

The aim of this study is to present a comparative analysis of proverbs with the word cat in Portuguese and Romanian. Proverbs are part of the cultural memory of a community and they can be considered privileged elements that allow us to more easily observe the interaction between language and culture. This comparative analysis of proverbs focuses on two levels, lexical and semantic. At the lexical level the lexemes that make up the structure of proverbs are analysed. They are grouped into various archilexemes (animals, domestic space, food, natural phenomena, etc.). The comparison between the two languages highlights not only similarities, but...

Research on variations and the validity of the proverbs collected by Fernán Caballero

Salud M.ª Jarilla Bravo

Romanica Olomucensia 2024, 36(2):275-288 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2024.022

As time passes by, speakers' paremiological competence diminishes and breaks down. Proverbs gradually lose their relevance and adapt to new needs and linguistic changes; they undergo variations that move them away from their more classical form, facilitating their adaptation to new times and, above all, to lexical evolution. The translator who searches for paremias in old repertoires is sometimes unable to locate the possible variants of the form. This can lead the translator to make the mistake of thinking that it is a de-automatisation carried out with a specific function by the literary author. This research aims to locate the possible variations...

Stefano Morabito

Romanica Olomucensia 2024, 36(2):289-302 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2024.023

The translation of paremias in literary texts is a challenge for the translator, even in the case of related languages. This article analyses the Italian translation of the paremias that are used in César Pérez Gellida's La suerte del enano. This work has been chosen because Pérez Gellida makes such extensive use of paremias in his novels that this can be considered one of their characteristics, and because it is his first work to have been translated into Italian. For the purposes of the study, paremias were extracted from the original text and catalogued, and it was noted that there are also deautomatisations and some 'invented' paremias or...

The role of proverbs in Chilndren's and Young Adult Literature: a semantic-literary approach to two Spanish publications

Rafael Negrete-Portillo

Romanica Olomucensia 2024, 36(2):303-315 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2024.024

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that proverbs can be seamlessly incorporated into literary texts for a young readership without necessitating adaptations of the plot or distorting narrative structures. With this aim all the proverbs identified in two highly successful stories targeted at children and adolescents were extracted: El sabio Marut, for ages six and up; and Antes de medianoche, for ages ten and up, both written by Ana Alonso. Afterwards, the proverbs were classified semantically, partly following the thematic proposal of Mª Josefa Canellada and Berta Pallares, partly that of the Refranero multilingüe. Finally,...

Cognitive study of metaphors in the proverbs of Spanish play titles (15th-18th centuries)

Miguel Ángel Pozo-Montaño

Romanica Olomucensia 2024, 36(2):317-330 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2024.025

In recent years, there has been a notable and growing interest in cognitive analysis and its relationship with linguistics. This study proposes a cognitive perspective to examine and categorise the titles of theatrical works written between the 15th and 18th centuries and gathered in the research study "Índice de las obras clásicas de la literatura española, en cuyos títulos figuran refranes frases hechas (Siglos XV-XVIII)" by José de Jaime Gómez and José María de Jaime Lorén. The methodology employed involves the classification of these paremiological elements in the light of the book Metaphors We Live By, developed by Lakoff and Johnson,...

Proverbialisation of historical and literary figures in Spanish and Polish

Jakub Szymañski

Romanica Olomucensia 2024, 36(2):331-348 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2024.026

This article contributes to the study of contrastive paremiology in Spanish and Polish. It focuses on the proverbialisation of historical and literary figures in the collections of proverbs of these two languages. The study aims to cast light upon the incorporation of this type of character in paremias in relation to the culture of each linguistic community. The corpus of decontextualised paremias of a popular character consists of 305 paremias extracted manually from one Polish and four Spanish dictionaries of proverbs and was subjected to quantitative and qualitative analysis. The working methodology was based on the procedures of the members and...
