Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):3-10 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.002

From Valpuesta to Silos- The sources of Castilian is a scientific project that reflects the research, editorial and public outreach momentum driven by the Instituto Castellano y Leonés de la Lengua and its efforts to determine, date and explain the first records of the Castilian Romance language. Furthermore, this document also represents an invitation to a real and imaginary trip to investigate the birthplaces of the Castilian language and its early written manifestations that can be found written in five different points of the Castilla Citerior or Castella Vetula. In this particular north-eastern region of Burgos we find the geographical, historical...

Gitano, na. Historia contextualizada de una entrada en la lexicografía académica

Gitano, na. Contextualised history of an entry in the Spanish Royal Academy's lexicography

Ivo Buzek

Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):11-22 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.003

The aim of the paper is an analysis of the evolution of the entry gitano, na [Gypsy] in the Spanish Royal Academy's lexicographic tradition. Attention will be paid to the evolution of its lexicographic treatment and its correspondence to available textual documentation in the Academic corpora (CORDE, CDH, CREA, CORPES XXI and Fichero General) in order to see whether or not the Academy's dictionaries could serve as social dictionaries for the Spanish-speaking world and what kind of ideology they transmit to speakers of Spanish.

Petr Čermák

Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):23-33 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.004

The paper analyses Spanish equivalents of Czech processual adjectives. Based on linguistic material obtained from the InterCorp parallel corpus, the article presents a typology of these equivalents and a quantification of their uses. The data from the corpus shows a predominance of two typological equivalents, adjectives and subordinate phrases.

Pidgin, língua franca, sabir - um estudo terminológico

Pidgin, lingua franca, sabir - terminological study

Barbara Hlibowicka-Węglarz

Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):35-41 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.005

The terms pidgin, lingua franca and sabir appear very often in the sociolinguistic literature; however, they are not properly defined. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to define the complexity of the reality which accompanies the formation and functioning of the above-mentioned linguistic phenomena. Moreover, characteristic features of each of these forms are presented in this study to emphasise the similarities and differences between them.

Observaciones respecto a las tres variantes del sistema numérico shuar

Some observations on the three variants of the Shuar numerical system

Miroslav Valeš

Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):43-51 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.006

The limited ability of the Shuar language to express number drew the attention of the first researchers who came into contact with this ethnic group in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate and exemplify the changes by comparing the situation that the early researchers found, Gnerre's observations made in the '70s of the last century, and the current situation. The fundamental data come from the author's own research carried out among the Shuar since 2010. The results reveal the dynamics and vitality of three competing numerical systems. The situation of language contact has led not only to the decline of the original numerical...

A marginalidade subversiva em Stella Manhattan de Silviano Santiago

Subversive marginality in Silviano Santiago's Stella Manhattan

Zuzana Burianová

Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):53-64 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.007

The aim of this article is to reflect on marginalised hybrid identity in the novel Stella Manhat‑ tan (1985) by the Brazilian writer Silviano Santiago. The question of identity is discussed in relation to the issues of artistic creation in postmodernity and the political situation during the Brazilian military regime. The article draws on some key concepts in Santiago's essayistic work, such as "amphibious literature", "the postmodern narrator", "the astute homosexual" or "the space in-between".

Le pouvoir et la magie des mots dans la création littéraire de Robert Pinget et de ses personnages-écrivains

The power and magic of words in the literary creation of Robert Pinget and his writer-protagonists

Czesław Grzesiak

Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):65-73 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.008

The paper discusses the role and the functioning of words as "literary material" in Robert Pinget's literary works and in the stories of his numerous writer-protagonists. The latter, in their écriture, resort to a variety of language games, exploit polysemy, make use of lexical and syntactic variants, deform word meanings, create novel, often bizarre words, and propose funny stories. In this way, both Pinget and his protagonists demonstrate-in their literary creation-the magic and the power of words.

La incontinencia verbal y el fracaso de la II República Española. El discurso político irresponsable y su contribución al estallido de la Guerra Civil

Verbal incontinence and the failure of the Second Spanish Republic. Irresponsible political discourse and its contribution to the outbreak of the Civil War in Spain

Jiří Chalupa

Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):75-91 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.009

The intention of this paper is to show how much the tragic failure of the Second Spanish Republic was the result not only of the economic, social, and international situation, but also the totally irresponsible behaviour of many of the main political actors in the 'thirties. Some speeches of Manuel Azaña, Francisco Largo Caballero, José María Gil Robles, and José Antonio Primo de Rivera will be analysed in order to show how much those iconic characters let themselves be seduced by their own words, speaking in a very reckless manner without thinking of the possible consequences of such diatribes. Some of those personalities were being changed into...

Olivença, filha da Espanha e neta de Portugal

Olivenza, daughter of Spain and granddaughter of Portugal

Petra Svobodová

Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):93-105 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.010

The article is dedicated to the problematic status of the region of Olivenza, which is situated on the border between Portugal and Spain. This region was annexed by Spain during the Napoleonic Wars and it was returned to Portugal by the Congress of Vienna. Nevertheless, despite having recognised Portuguese sovereignty in 1817, Spain has never returned it and has administered it since then. Because of this, the border between Spain and Portugal has never been permanently settled and demarcated and Olivenza has represented a subject of dispute up to now. The article gives a brief outline of the Portuguese and Spanish presence in this territory, concentrating...

L'Auvergne vue par une Parisienne ou l'hommage au pays natal

The Auvergne through the eyes of a Parisian or a tribute to the author's native country

Marie Voždová

Romanica Olomucensia 2016, 28(1):107-114 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2016.011

The article focuses on the analysis of opposite motifs, the countryside and the city, in a prosaic universe, particularly in the novel Les Pays by Marie Hélène Lafon, a contemporary French writer, a native of the Auvergne and living in Paris, whose works contain autobiographical elements. In her fiction, the author constantly mixes two spatiotemporal levels: the turbulent life of the capital city is confronted with the peaceful existence of a farm in the mountains. The interest is concentrated on the principal figure, Claire, who has to choose between the two worlds and live her life.
