Daniel Petrík
Romanica Olomucensia 2011, 23(2):137-146 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2011.018
Zipf's Laws are rules that describe the distribution of words in the text by their frequency, the number of different meanings and other features. Its author, Harvard professor George Kingsley Zipf (1902-1950), while studying natural languages mentioned the so-called Principle of least effort, which means that the language is focused on the economy and clarity. The principle has an impact on how the speaker unconsciously choose the terms by which he expresses his ideas (for example, the mostly used words are usually the shortest and with multiple meanings, etc.). Zipf's Laws are valid in any natural language and even in other natural systems; however,...

La mort a le visage d'une femme. À propos des Histoires singulières de Jean Muno
Renata Bizek-Tatara
Romanica Olomucensia 2011, 23(2):147-154 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2011.019
In his collection of phantasy short stories Les histoires singulières, Muno breaches the convention of the genre that concerns the presentation of death and phantoms. Frightening and fascinating at the same time, death always assumes the figure of a woman who is either average or seducing. Her coming is announced by female messengers. Death in Muno is not a tragic event: it is a promise of a better life and a salvation from the worries of schematic and overwhelming everyday reality.

A personagem feminina no conto «Amor» de Clarice Lispector como uma possível chave para a interpretação compendiada de toda a sua obra
Vlastimil Váně
Romanica Olomucensia 2011, 23(2):179-186 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2011.023
Analyzing the short story "Love" included in the collection Family Ties (1960) written by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector we start from the structural analysis proposed by Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna. Then we focus, taking into account Herbert Marcuse's interpretation of Freud, on the female protagonist of the short story who is imprisoned in the patriarchal system, representing the desperate female condition in the society. As we consider this short story to be the exemplary one for all author's literary work, the present analysis tries to offer the general synthesis of its possible reading.
