Quelques observations sur les mots tronqués dans le français contemporain
Radka Fridrichová
Romanica Olomucensia 2013, 25(1):1-13 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2013.001
Nowadays, the economy of space and time is a major concern, reflected in people's lives, including the communication in their language evolving with the society which it reflects. It is perhaps this need to shorten that gave birth to the truncation - a phenomenon characteristic for modern French. The objective is to describe some features of this process, including the syllable structure, the relationship between terminal vowels and consonants, and the role of the apostrophe.

Romanica Olomucensia 2013, 25(1):21-35 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2013.003
The following study was conceived to prompt a debate between translation and self-translation. This has been done through the analysis of the book Muller no baño by Manuel Rivas, examining the different linguistic features (lexical, grammatical, and cultural) determining the quality of a good translation. Similarly, the paper focuses on the interferences and cultural problems that arise when working with two languages in contact (Galician and Spanish, in this particular case).
Literature and Culture
Gueto ou Favela?
Fernando Costa
Romanica Olomucensia 2013, 25(1):37-45 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2013.004
This article will explore the factors that differentiate ghettos from favelas (shanty towns). The first step will be to discuss their similarities, but it will increasingly point out their differences and special characteristics. In Brazil, the problem of creating spaces of territorial exclusion goes beyond practices that are traditional and commonly held in the more developed regions of the world like Europe, where one can find territories of social segregation based on stereotyped and relative concepts like "race" and/or "culture". Brazil, on the other hand, presents new forms of socio-territorial exclusion based on economic factors and on the appearance...

Daniel Esparza
Romanica Olomucensia 2013, 25(1):47-59 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2013.005
The history of surfing origins in Spain is an issue rarely explored as yet. In order to go a step further, the paper explores the Spanish press to find references about surfing. The results have been crucial to know the origins of surfing in Spain: in order to fix dates, events and names. The press articles are classified by categories and all of them are listed in chronological order that could be useful as a databasis to other researchers.
«Médula en traducción». Rilke, Creeley y Jaccottet en tres poetas españoles (Juan Andrés García Román, Marcos Canteli y Rafael José Díaz)
Mario Martín Gijón
Romanica Olomucensia 2013, 25(1):61-71 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2013.006
This paper analyses the translations from Rainer Maria Rilke by Juan Andrés García Román, from Robert Creeley by Marcos Canteli and from Philippe Jaccottet by Rafael-José Díaz. It intends to analyse the reasons and consequences of a poet's dedication to translation. In these three cases, the paper observes the different ways of translation by these poets and the relation of their translations to their own literary works. This intensive dedication to the translation of three great poets of German, English and French literatures shows the breadth of interests of the most innovating authors in contemporary Spanish poetry.
Les « sœurs » de la princesse de Clèves au XVIIIe siècle : exemple des héroïnes de Madame de Tencin
Andrea Tureková
Romanica Olomucensia 2013, 25(1):73-82 | DOI: 10.5507/ro.2013.007
This paper aims to provide an analysis of two novels written by Mme de Tencin, Les Mémoires du comte de Comminge and Les Malheurs de l'amour, insofar as they can be partly considered as a rewriting of the famous Mme de Lafayette's novel La Princesse de Clèves. The analysis focuses on three main woman characters: Adélaïde, Eugénie and Pauline who appear as << sisters >> of the Princesse de Clèves, each of them being a different version. The paper demonstrates that despite certain similarities, they are not "exact copies" and that Mme de Tencin succeeded in creating complex and original heroines.
